The Resort

Just 120 kilometers from Tbilisi along the scenic Georgian Military Road, Gudauri is the country’s largest and highest ski resort — a sunlit plateau on the southern slopes of the Caucasus. Established in the late 1980s, it has grown into Georgia’s premier alpine destination, combining dramatic mountain scenery with exceptional ski terrain and year-round adventure.

With elevations ranging from 2,000 to 3,300 meters, Gudauri offers more than 80 kilometers of groomed runs certified by the FIS, and 14 modern cable lifts by Doppelmayr and Poma. Its wide-open slopes, deep powder, and endless off-piste terrain make it a haven for freeride and backcountry enthusiasts.

The road to Gudauri offers one of Georgia’s most scenic drives. Just 120 kilometers north of Tbilisi, the journey follows the historic Georgian Military Highway. In about an hour and a half, you travel from the lowlands into alpine landscapes, climbing through valleys and mountain passes and discovering landmarks along the way.

Mtskheta

At the intersection of the Mtkvari and Aragvi rivers, Mtskheta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the old capital of Georgia. Located on an ancient trade route, Mtskheta stands out with its distinctly medieval look, characteristic architecture, and ancient history. Whether you are coming to Gudauri or heading to Tbilisi, swing by this lovely old town with its laid-back atmosphere. Explore the centuries-old Orthodox Christian cathedrals or simply stroll through the narrow cobbled streets and pick up a locally crafted keepsake.

Zhinvali

Just 60 km from Gudauri, Zhinvali (Jinvali) Lake, enveloped in gorgeous mountains on both sides, awes visitors with stunning views. Located on the Georgian Military Highway, it was in the 1980s when Soviet authorities decided to build a water reservoir to supply the rapidly developing city of Tbilisi. Now a must-stop vantage point, the Ananuri Architectural Complex sits on the shores of the Zhinvali Reservoir.

Ananuri

Ananuri medieval fortress, dating back to the 17th century, is impossible to pass by. Perched elegantly on the shores of the Aragvi River, it has long served the country, guarding the highway that connects the northern and southern territories of the Caucasus region. Ananuri Fortress has witnessed numerous battles throughout history. As one of the best-preserved monuments along the Georgian Military Highway, Ananuri is well worth a day trip to experience Georgia’s unique architectural heritage. The fortress is on the UNESCO Tentative List.

Pasanauri

If you want to savor the best khinkali in Georgia, make a stop in Pasanauri — a mountain village famed for its traditional khinkali: dumplings filled with minced meat, spices, and herbs.
